Motorcycle Safety Tips

motorcycle accident statistics

Riding a motorcycle is one of the most liberating experiences on the road. It’s a real thrill. However, it’s also dangerous. Few drivers take note of motorcyclists while driving, and many treat them as second-class citizens. That’s just wrong. Everyone has a right to public roadways. Driving is about safety. If you’re riding a motorcycle, you can’t control how the other drivers behave. However, you can take the proper precautions to keep yourself safe.

Tips for Safe Riding

It cannot be said enough: wear a helmet. A properly-fitting helmet, complete with face shield or protective eyewear, is crucial. Wearing one is the best way to prevent a head injury or even death.

Next, wear appropriate riding gear. If the weather calls for rain, dress accordingly. Your best bet is to wear leather, boots with nonskid soles, and gloves, as each item helps prevent severe injuries. You may want to consider attaching reflective tape to your clothing articles for increased visibility, too. Many cyclists choose not to, though.

Obey Traffic Laws

This one should be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many motorcycle riders ignore basic traffic laws. First and foremost, obey the speed limit; the faster you drive, the longer it takes to stop. Those extra few seconds while stopping could result in a crash.

Lastly, be aware of all local laws and rules of the road. It’s easy enough to zip in and out of traffic, though it’s reckless and dangerous. Avoid doing so. Instead, stick to your lane, use your turn signal, and be alert to your surroundings. Do not risk your neck.
